A dedicated cop, a good son, a loyal partner...Ask anyone who knew him then, that’s how they would have described Lachlan Graham, before an undercover operation went bad, and his werewolf partner, Vector Clanahan, decided to leave the Seattle Police Department for a job with with FBI. Now, three years later, Lachlan has thrown away his career, fallen in debt, and his downstairs neighbor is trying to hire him as a private investigator. All of that seems manageable until a psychic leaves him a message in tarot cards shortly before she’s violently murdered. Meanwhile, Vector Clanahan's about to return to his old stomping grounds as a serial killer he's been tracking leads him right to his ex-partner's front door. Feelings between the two respark as they put aside past pains to work together to catch this killer before he can perform a magical ritual for ultimate power, three generations in the making. Welcome to an alternate vision of Seattle, where the magical and supernatural are known. Where you’re just as likely to find werewolves in Pike Place Market as fish mongers. Where death comes in many guises and love is never easy. The Profane Series is a companion to The Blood & Bone Series.

I have to say that I expected something different from this book by the description. This is the first in a series, from what I understand and I realize that setting up back story and history between characters is very important but this somehow felt flat to me. Each reader has their own experience but I never really connected with the feelings these two men had for each other, probably because they spend a lot of the book away from each other. It's not so much romance as suspense with a little romance thrown into the mix. So don't go into this hoping for a love story. There is something there, but that is not the main focus of the book.

Medium Rare The Profane Series Volume 1 Lia Cooper Books Reviews

I haven't read any of the series that is a companion of this but I didn't feel as though I was missing anything. Be warned there is NO SEX in this story just a little kissing near the end. I enjoyed the story enough though that I am going to read the other series - the author kindly has a timeline to show how the two series intertwine - when I have time. Unfortunately however errors in spelling (sherif and txting two examples) and context (wrong headline date, the MC's are transposed) pulled me out of the story a few times. So 4 stars.
I've read a few books by Lia Cooper, so when I saw this one out and on KU I grabbed it. So I went into the story with no expectations. I saw it was the first in the series so in my mind that meant no back story, no losing my place, no trying to remember past characters. Unfortunately all that still happened.

This series is loosely linked to the Blood and Bone Trilogy. Some of the past characters show up at the police station and with the pack. Most of the story takes place in Seattle. Since I read only two of the Blood and Bone books, and the last one was two years ago, I had a foggy recollection of events. To add to my confusion, the author explains there is a prequel out that is woven into this story, a beginning I never read. I didn't even flip 3 pages and I was going back to the beginning. What was that date? Where am I now - Is this a look back or in the present? And if that wasn't enough I'm getting immersed in two different lives, that of Lachlan (human) and Vector (werewolf). Pretty soon the back story didn't interest me, I wanted the two to reconnect.

Lachlan has suffered for the last three years. He had no idea he was suffering from the mate pull / loss and by the end of this story, it's still not explained to him! You would think having a cousin working there in the police force that another wolf would recognize the symptoms. But no, the suspense must build to where you're waiting for resolve. Well guess what, it never happens.

It's really sad when a dedicated detective leaves his life's work and is existing on ramen noodles. That $500.00 is the answer to prayers. And at the end of the book there isn't resolve with that, either. Does Vector stay and is he able to get out of the FBI? Will he explain the mate pull?

Vector is living on his own prayer, not eating enough or sleeping well. His wolf half is becoming undone. Too much travel, stress over the job, and no consideration from his work partner. It's a recipe for disaster. Vector comes across as having no feelings, as coasting along, not investing himself. So when he hits Seattle and learns about his old partner Lachlan, he's so far removed, he acts unconcerned. He hides behind a mask but then Lachlan does too. Is it any wonder the ratings on this story are sinking fast?

I honestly feel this is a story to read when the second one comes out. And the continuing story better rehash these two guys so we can get past their 'Need to talk' and into whether they reconnect as mates.

I keep shaking my head over this story. The alpha should have been on the phone figuring out where one of her pack was, how he was, and helping him. I don't understand how so many could drop the ball to help Lachlan and Vector separately and together. It's a frustrating read wrapped up in solving a serial killer mystery. And guess what - The killer was caught but no follow up to see if that whole cult is gone. I kept thinking the old lady at the apartment was involved, her and her tea leaves. - Dan's Wife
What a mess had no idea they felt the same about each other. Too busy denying how they felt. Now few years later they have a chance to fix things and be happy. Waiting until I can afford the next book to see what happens.
Wonderful story and I'm already looking forward to book 2. It does move back and forth in time to build the backstory between the MC s and that was a bit distracting for me, so be aware. However it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story. Bring on book 2 (soon I hope!).
Wow this book was intense! At first I couldn't get into the back and forth (flipping from past to present) but after a few chapters I really got into it. The plot is about two men Vector and Lachlan who are ex police partners. They haven't seen each other for years but when a serial killer picks Lachlan's neighbor, they begin working together. Old hurts and confusion about their past along with the eerie occult killing theme makes this a truly awesome read.
I read the short story version of this book right after I finished "The Blood & Bone Trilogy. I don't remember if I left a review but I do know I gave it 3 ***'s. What I do remember was how robbed/cheated I felt because the short story should have been so much more.

I can't really explain how exited & pleased I was at received an email from the Author saying she changed her mind about Suicide ", the original title and making it into a three part trilogy. Let's just leave it at there may have been some singing, The Happy, Happy, Joy
Joy song & the happy dance might've made a brief appearance.
This third of the new trilogy is excellent!! ) The author took a mediocre, at best, short story & turns it into an incredible novel!! She superbly snakes around the existing material and proficiently pours powerful scenes into the narrative that grab your attention and not let it go. Also, I really like that she is keeping this trilogy in the same universe of " The Blood & Bones Trabsolutely cake &It means we already have a basic working knowledge of the paranormal place & persons. There's no time wasted in big chunks of world &/or character building.

I absolutely cannot wait for the next two booka.
